Complete History of Koh-i-Noor Diamond


It is one of oldest, precious and largest diamond in World also known by another names such as Kohinoor and Koh-i-nur.  I need to tell you that the current name of Kohinoor Diamond is in Persian which means (Mountain Of Light). This diamond actually came from alluvial mines of India thousands of year ago but still has no clear answer currently. But currently it is the part of British Crown Jewels at the Tower of London(UK) with its original weight of 106.25 carats . It is seen by thousands of visitors each day and Real price of Kohinoor Diamond is unknown and located in Tower Of London with crown jewels. The Expected value of Crown is approx $10 - $15 billions.

From where Kohinoor was Originated?

Basically it came from Krishna River (kollur Mine) which was in Golconda which is now Andhra Pradesh, India and was firstly owned by Kakatiya Dynasty.

Re-cutting of Diamond

The cutting of Diamond began in 17 July 1852 at factory named Garrard & Co and cutting of diamond took 38 days. The cutting of Kohinoor Diamond was happening under supervision of Prince Albert, Duke of Wellington and mineralogist James Tennant. Cost in cutting of diamond was around £ 8000 in complete operation. Kohinoor Diamond has 66 facets, usually if cutting of diamond is done brilliant it has 58 facets but Kohinoor has 8 additional facets which is quite fantastic.

Fight for Diamond Ownership

Countries such as India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran they all are demanding for a diamond for a long time from UK at various Point.
But its very difficult to find who is the actual owner of Kohinoor Diamond and from where firstly it has originated, nobody has any clue in writing. 

Early Journey of Crown

Maharajah Ranjeet singh new owner of diamond willed the diamond to the East India Company. In 1839, after the death of Maharajah Ranjeet Singh his will was not executed. And after that on March 29 1849 the Last Treaty of Lahore was signed and finally given Kohinoor Diamond to Queen Victoria. Diamond looks like Gem which was names as "Kohinoor" according to article 3 of Lahore Treaty. Kohinoor was taken from Shah Sooja-ool- moolk by Maharajah Ranjeet Singh.


Journey of Diamond to United Kingdom

On 7 December 1849, Governor General received Kohinoor from Dr. Login(governor of Citadel) with all receipts and documentation in presence of all members of administration and affairs of Punjab.

After that jewel was sealed in small iron safe in a red box. Box was sealed with red tap and wax and after that diamond was sent for presentation to England to Queen Victoria with tight security arrangements. Kohinoor diamond actually was arrived at Britain on 29 June 1850 and was formally submitted to Queen Victoria on 3 July 1850 at Buckingham Palace by deputy chairman of East India Company. Currently it is kept in Tower Of London with crown jewels in United Kingdom.
